NAFL set for showcase on Grand StrandBy Alan Blondin ablondin@thesunnews.com Players in the North American Football League generally play for little more than love of the game.
It will feel like there's a little more at stake Saturday night at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Players representing a pair of undefeated teams - the Nashville Storm and Bellingham (Wash.) Bulldogs - will be playing in the 12th annual championship game of the amateur NAFL, which features players from their teens into their 40s.
Nashville (14-0) and Bellingham (13-0) have proven to be the best squads in the 32-team league and will play for the title at 7 p.m. Tickets to the game are $10 each.
The championship game is the highlight of a weekend of events that also includes the NAFL All-Star Game at 4 p.m. Sunday at Doug Shaw Stadium.
The championship weekend was held in Miami last year. The championship and all-star games were combined in the fourth league season in 2002, and the weekend was held in Springfield, Mo., in 2002; Orlando, Fla., from 2003-06; Las Vegas in 2007; and Atlanta in 2008.
League officials contacted Myrtle Beach city and school officials to inquire about having the game here this year. "What we try to look at is this is just not an opportunity to come down and participate in the all-star weekend, but also to bring their families and turn it into a mini-vacation," NAFL commissioner Robin Williams said. "So we look at locations there are more things to do than football."
The NAFL features teams throughout the U.S. and parts of Canada. Teams aren't allowed to pay players because they would lose their NCAA eligibility. The league provides a way for players to continue playing a game they enjoy while also presenting a possible avenue to advance either to a level of professional football or to collegiate football.
"I definitely have a passion for football and football at this level because to me that's what it's all about, it's about giving these young people a different avenue to follow than often times they do follow," said Williams, who like the players is a volunteer with a full-time job. She works at a county jail near Denver.
Teams are allowed rosters of up to 60 players. Rosters are frozen after the sixth regular-season game unless the league accepts a hardship application from a team and it is allowed to add or replace players.
There are four Super Regions divided into northern and southern regions. The Super Central and Super East regions are in the National Football Conference, and the Super West and Super Mountain regions are in the American Football Conference.
Each team plays 10 regular-season games, as many preseason games as they wish and up to five playoff games, and most games are played on high school fields.
The NAFL headquarters moved to Atlanta after the league was purchased by Atlanta resident and sports marketing company owner Christopher White last year. It was previously based in Minneapolis and New York City because that's where former owner Robert Licopoli lived. White has been a coach and team owner in the league.
Championship weekend festivities also include a welcome reception Thursday at host hotel Palmetto Shores Resort, an NAFL owners workshop today (Friday), a players workshop sponsored and hosted by the Minor League Football Players Association (MLFPA) today (Friday), and an awards/all-star banquet tonight (Friday night).
Nashville is expected to have a nearly full roster of 50 to 60 players because a bus for the team left Wednesday night. Bellingham players are traveling individually and at least 40 Bulldogs are expected. www.thesunnews.com/2010/11/12/1808572/season-results.html

Myrlte Beach to host Minor League Football Championship By Press Release Published: November 08, 2010 » 0 Comments | Post a Comment vote nowBuzz up!MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Myrtle Beach will play host to the North American Football League’s 12th annual Championship game Saturday, Nov. 13 at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. NAFL XII features the Bellingham Bulldogs (Washington) from the league’s American Football Conference and the Nashville Storm from the league’s National Football Conference, who have survived five thrilling rounds of playoffs. Tickets to each game are $10. More information is available at www.nafl.org. The game promises a supercharged atmosphere with each team’s 60 dedicated yet unpaid minor leaguers, playing in the hopes of making it to the next level, for pride and for a love of the game. “The Championship and All-Star weekend is always an awesome, entertaining climax to the NAFL season. It’s a weekend to max out on fun, and this year we’ve focused on making it simple, enjoyable, and affordable,” League President Christopher White said. Nathaniel Claybrooks is a linebacker with the Nashville Storm. The Storm won the National Conference Championship on Oct. 23, and Claybrooks is more than excited about the opportunity to play for the NAFL Championship. “We worked incredibly hard through the season and the playoffs to get to this point, juggling football and our regular jobs. The entire team is so pumped for the game, incredibly focused. Even with all the great players on the Storm, some of these guys have never won a championship at any level and they’d really love to get that ring,” said Claybrooks. Other festivities during the weekend include a Players University sponsored and hosted by the Minor League Football Players Association (MLFPA) the morning of Friday, Nov. 12 and a formal awards banquet and All-Star selection dinner that evening. At the banquet, the league will present trophies to the AFC and NFC winners, along with team, player and team staff member of the year awards. Another highlight of the evening is the announcement of the 2010 All-Star players, who will be presented with their uniforms and gift bags. In addition to the Players University, other educational activities are the NAFL Owners University. The University training workshop will have national and local speakers presenting topics team and players specific topics. “Myrtle Beach and Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium are the perfect sites for this championship,” said White. “It’s a fun, accommodating location and we’re glad that we can bring in a large amount of people for the weekend to boost business at area hotels, restaurants and stores.” White encouraged sports fans to come out and enjoy the weekend’s games and festivities. For ticket pricing or get additional information on the league’s Championship Weekend, go online to www.nafl.org.

The Bulldogs accepted their AFC Championship award for being in the top two in the country (held by our offensive coordinator Tod Shackleford). The one we play for tomorrow is the NAFL National Championship trophy. the big surprise was the TEAM OF THE YEAR AWARD (held by me JEFF FISHER). This award is won because we set the example nationwide for how teams can do good for their community. i'm extremely proud of this team.

Meninblack2002
seriously, the OC got carried away and was not calling a good game, all the credit to the Dogs, but the OC can not get carried away and start panicing in a game like this. The same play was called numerous times "deep to #11 Taylor"!
It was hard and frustrating to watch especially knowing how hard the rest of the guys worked to get there
TEAM.......is what got the Dogs that far. Great year guys
Faithful fans
